And I’m not talking about the writing process. This week (just like everybody else, I guess) is dedicated to halal bihalal roadshows. Beredar dari sana ke mari, ke situ ke sini: keluarga A, B, C, A+B, B+C, ke teman SMP, teman SMA, reuni geng, halal bihalal manajemen, dsb, dsb.
Hari ini babysitter saya izin sehari untuk pergi ke Jakarta mengunjungi saudaranya, so there’s no way I can leave my 3-year-old behind. Sorenya, gladi resik reuni SMP 2 angkatan ’90 di mana saya menyanggupi menjadi seksi acara merangkap MC merangkap penyanyi merangkap penyumbang doorprize (no, not DVD player or magic jar, just free books and CDs, heheh).
Lusa, siang sampai sore reuni SMP. I used to be one of those shameless party pirates, the only girl the gang, in fact. Syarat masuk LTX cuma dua: makan banyak dan nggak tahu malu, and apparently I’m qualified). Candil (Seurieus Band, former LTX) called me up this afternoon and told me about LTX reunion, his question was: “Di mana ya tempat makan yang bisa murah dan banyak?”. 16 years, man. And we’re the same bonek as we were.
Sunday, will be the only plausible time to set the timer. But on Monday? I gotta be in Jakarta to sign the contract for “Perahu Kertas”. Tuesday, tentatively, production meeting for Rectoverso. Jadi kapan di Bandungnya, dong? No worries, I'll set my timer on Sunday anyhow. Yea. So much for 800 rb per month-room. I guess I'll be writing my stuffs mostly in Cipularang.
I wonder… can I just say no to meetings for 55 days? Can I just say no to interviews? Can I just stop this halal bihalal and reunion parade? Can I just pause my life for a while?
That remote control from the movie “Click” can be quite useful for me now.

The Motion Picture Inside Our Head
Reading a good story is like watching a good movie. Watching a lousy movie is like reading a lousy story.
It’s not an easy job. You don’t have other people’s perspectives to freshen up your objectivity. But you also save yourself from a lot of hassle, for you don’t have to argue with anybody else except yourself.
Film ABG, dewasa, komedi, action, thriller, horor, dsb. Lalu style apa yang ingin dipakai? Sinetron-ish (black and white—baik sekali atau jahat sekali, deskripsi cenderung lewat dialog ketimbang suasana), Korean-ish/Japanese-ish (gray characters—nobody’s too good and nobody’s too bad either, deskripsi cenderung lewat suasana ketimbang dialog), Telenovela-ish (almost like Sinetron-ish, but they wear better make-ups), India-ish (glorify the love scenes, baby!), dsb.
We didn’t do it on purpose, of course. But sometimes we got carried away with our own hard effort to convince our readers. We may also be subconsciously influenced by those soapy, overrated scenes from the sinetrons we loathe but we couldn’t help to watch. Or we simply haven’t had sharp enough senses to create a balance between direct-verbal dialogue with indirect-nonverbal description. In real life, some things are better left unspoken, silence is sometimes louder than words, and these nonverbal expressions can be so powerful once they’re successfully delivered in our story.
I’m pro with Korean-ish/Japanese-ish all the way, and I think that was also my intention eleven years ago when I first wrote “Kugy & Keenan”. But when I reread it now, I realize there are many incoherencies between the style I’d intend to adapt with how I actually wrote the story. Many dialogues were just too emotional, too explosive, too outspoken. Some scenes are just too India-ish (e.g., hopping on a train together and landed in each other’s arms incidentally. Gosh. I know it’s a classic, and it works like wonder for squeezing your reader’s heart, but… come on!) And, man, there were so many cliches and predictabilities.
Reviewing our characters is also a very, VERY, important step. There’s a saying: human is a creature of habit. It is true. We all have unique, particular habits that signify who we are. Same thing with our characters. Saya baru menyadari kekuatan faktor kebiasaan dalam pembentukan karakter. Meski tampaknya sepele, tapi dampaknya luar biasa. Lalu mereka punya tempat langganan, satu warung nasi bernama Pemadam Kelaparan. I didn’t have it before, but adding this ‘habitual place’ again brings my characters more down to earth. We can taste each different element even though they are crammed together. Just like characters crammed together in the same story, but we can tell the unique traits of each one of them.
Creating a gray character is quite tricky too. It’s so much easier to create the black and white ones. First of all, we have hundreds of references of the black and whites. Just turn on our local TV, any channel, and there you go. Just copy and paste any character in our sinetrons, you’ll have the best black and whites. No rocket science required. You have to combine traits (some ‘bad’, some ‘good’), seperti mbok jamu yang meramu unsur pahit dan manis menjadi minuman yang cenderung pahit atau cenderung manis. You have to consider background and initial motivation of your character. Essentially, people got bad or good out of a reason. In building gray characters, you have to take all that into consideration and able to reveal it in your story. Black and whites don’t need much of it. In black and white world, some people are born bad and good, and that’s the end of the story. We’d like to believe that, for it is an easier truth to digest, but realistically that’s not the case.
So, those are my real homework. Saya bersyukur mendapat kesempatan beberapa kali menjadi juri lomba penulisan. Believe me, switching our position from a writer to a jury can totally change our perspective. Suddenly I can capture my own mistake, my own weakness, mirrored in the stacks of manuscripts I have to read and give score to. Now I must say, I believe that one can tell a good story only from its first paragraph. Sounds scary but true. If you don’t captivate your reader from the very beginning, it is so unlikely you’ll be able to captivate them at all.
I guess I'm also trying to remind myself here about that motion picture inside my head. I gotta love watching it myself. May it be a blockbuster material or award-winning material or both... it just has to win my own heart and soul, otherwise... don't bother.
PS. My other homework is to shop for my headquarter. I know, I know, I meant to do it since days ago. But Bandung’s traffic is just… unbelievable. When will you Jakartans return home? We want our road back.

Mystery of "Mystery"
Just like a movie, our life too is enriched with collections of soundtracks.
We all know how a song can move and inspire us limitlessly. A song, with its words, melodies, and layers of music, can pierce right through the deepest core of our soul, faster and more effective than a sharp bullet. We can remove a bullet from a wound, but a song can haunt us for a lifetime.
Dan selama yang namanya mesin waktu belum dijual di pasaran, sebuah lagu dapat menjalankan fungsi serupa, mengantarkan kita pada satu masa, faster than the speed of light (tanpa polusi lagi). Karena musik adalah pembatas halaman hidup kita.
I shall share with you all the one song that inspired me to write “Perahu Kertas” in the first place, way back in the 90’s. No. It’s not even the whole song. It’s just a chorus.
Maybe it’s all that we need is to meet in the middle of impossibilities
Standing at opposite poles, equal partners in a mystery
– “Mystery” (Indigo Girls)
Out of those 23 words—packaged in the right melody, voice, and music—came out 70.000 words. Amazing, huh?
It’s still even a mystery for me.

When Will The Timer Start?
Oh, boy. Do I want to start now! I am so ready to defeat that malicious blank page!
Reality check. Lebaran is coming less than 24 hours. No maids available. My son, Keenan, just recovered from gastro-enthritis he’d suffered for the last 4 days. My driver won’t be back working until Oct 18, which means I have to drive alone. Have I told you I hate driving? Took away so many precious ngelamun time.
I also need some basic stuffs for my new ‘office’. Let’s see: bed sheets, rugs, broom, trash bins, tissue rolls. I’d probably need some working chair. A proper one. What about stereo? You know, that micro mini hi-fi set. Every story needs a soundtrack, right? (heheh, mulai lebih nih)
So, the most realistic time to start is after Lebaran, or a day after that.
For the time being, I’ll just shop for my office needs. We’ll see if I end up with a new stereo and a sophisticated, ergonomic, working chair.
Anyhow, saya mengucapken Selamat Hari Raya Iedul Fitri. Minal Aidin Wal Faidzin. Selamat makan enak. Selamat cuci piring sendiri. Selamat bertemu lagi dalam beberapa hari!
Love, peace, respect, and gaul.

The "KK" Synchronicity
Do you believe in synchronicity? I do.
Allow me to share some weird synchronicities related to this project. Then guess what? Right after I finished reading, I looked up, and there was this black car right in front of mine, it was VIOS or some other similar car, not so sure, but one thing caught my eyes immediately. The plate number of that car ended with KK. File cerita “Perahu Kertas” dalam laptop saya masih diberi nama K&K. I mean, seriously, what are the chances? It was really like a message from the universe. Some said, synchronicity is served as a sign that we’re on the right path. So, of course, I was pretty delighted.
The second synchronicity happened when I started to rewrite some parts of K&K. Lagi-lagi, lokasinya di Tol Cipularang. I was checking some details of the story, dan saya terpikir untuk memasukkan detail berupa kaos group band yang sedang naik daun pada tahun ‘98-an. Penjaga tol tadi dengerin Limpbizkit.” And I was like, what? What? I did hear some rock music, but I didn’t recognize it. But he did. And it was Limpbizkit. Again, seriously, what are the chances?
The third synchronicity happened today. Langsung saya berhenti.

Pintu dibukakan oleh seorang pembantu. Dia bilang, masih ada kamar kosong. Saya pun mengecek kamarnya. Well, it was pretty standard, but it was not bad. A single bed, a desk, a cupboard, and a bathroom. No hot water, no internet. But, yea, I can live without those. Cuma ada 8 orang yang kos di sana. Saya langsung tanya tempat makan terdekat, it was approximately 300-400 m away. Even if I’m too lazy to walk, my house is only 15 mins drive. Supir saya bisa mengantarkan rantangan or something. And I kinda like that idea.
But I haven’t met the owner. And her facial expressions are just… flat. As if my situation is a very normal thing, as if she encountered the similar case every day. Thus, she said: okay, you can start to move in whenever you want. And so I went back home, thinking… wow. I have my headquarter! Dan mobil KK kembali hadir sebagai petunjuk. Now… let me ask this again, out loud: WHAT THE HECK ARE THE CHANCES?
Life, I tell ya, can be pretty amazing sometimes.

Nasib (Calon) Anak Kos
Salah satu kendala menjadi penulis sekaligus ibu dari seorang balita adalah: time and attention management. I completely agree with Chris Baty’s concept of Novel’s Headquarter. Boleh jadi satu pojokan di kafe, atau satu meja di tempat publik apa pun, intinya kita harus membuat garis batas tegas antara hidup normal kita dan hidup kita sebagai penulis (this may imply that writers don’t have normal lives. Of course, that’s not entirely the case. But I also think it’s somewhat true to some extent). So, yeah, katakanlah kita memperlakukan misi kepenulisan ini sebagai our secret life. Seperti Renegade yang siang jadi hakim, malam jadi pahlawan pembela kebenaran. Ibarat siang jadi Yono malam jadi Yolanda.
So here’s the plan: saya merencanakan menjadi anak kos, setidaknya untuk 60 hari, sampai novel itu selesai. Of course, I will not live there for 24 hours, but I’ll be in my kos-kosan during my ‘working hours’. Therefore I can write, undisturbed, for—let’s say—morning till afternoon.
I will have an office! Yea! Never in my life I’ve had an office experience. So, what do I need for this office room? Oke.
Yeah. Mantan daerah kekuasaan. Like it. Dia membantu saya cari info kos-kosan. I gave him the specs. He came back with one number, katanya tempat ini memenuhi seluruh persyaratan di atas. So I dialled the number.
+ Selamat siang, Pak.
+ Oh, gitu.
Dapat satu lagi kandidat tempat kos. Masih di daerah Ciumbuleuit. This time I will not say about my ex-mahasiswa status, or about my writing project.
+ Selamat siang, Mbak.
Sigh. But, cheer up, Dewi. There are dozen hundreds of kos-kosan out there. Ones that don’t care about me being the real mahasiswa or undercover mahasiswa. Ones that got some room available.
I got back to my brother in-law, and this time I downgrade my specs: kamar mandi di dalam, tempat tidur, meja belajar, ada warteg dalam radius 1 km. That’s it. That’s all I need.
The search continues…

An Open Invitation
I’m about to do something that was unthinkable for me before.
Never in my life I’ve thought of writing a diaryish blog. Diaryish blog for me is like, well, how it exactly sounds: diarrhea-ish. Not everybody has the most interesting thing to say, mostly they just don’t. Sorry. I don’t claim myself to be interesting as well, and that is why I’ve never had any of those diaryish blogs. Plus, they require time luxury, which I apparently don’t have.
Encer. Kurang makna. Kurang guna. Bau. Cuma bikin sakit perut. But I am not here to entertain anybody. I am not here to amuse anyone’s mind. I am here to challenge myself. In fact, this is a suicidal project. And I do long to die. A death that shall result in rebirth. Born anew.
The old Dewi believes that a good novel should take years to produce. The old Dewi believes that she’s a slow writer. The old Dewi believes that an ideal time span for a book production is one and a half year, two years at max. Well, that old Dewi needs to die.
At this point, you probably wonder what that fuss is all about. Fair enough. Let me share with you the story behind this invitation:
Lagi-lagi, format bersambung. Saya ingat bagaimana saya lupa makan, lupa bersosialisasi, lupa belajar, demi menyelesaikan halaman per halaman, menyambar buku demi buku seperti orang sakaw.
I mean, admit it, your 11-years-old manuscript will not be pretty. It will be damn ugly. You’ll be rolling down the floor laughing at your metaphors, your choice of words, your dialogues. Blah. Blah. Blah. Yuck. Yuck. Yuck.
But I tell you what I have. I have a good story. A lively plot. Believable and lovable characters. I believe I have all the right ingredients. They just need a whole new kitchen. And they have my faith—a hundred and ten percent. Right under those piles of stupid metaphors, ugly wordings, corny scenes, there lies my most precious gem. I just have to dig harder. Or, in a more realistic languange: I just have to rewrite from zero.
I tell you what else I have with me. I have an e-book in PDF format, a gift from a dear friend who’s also struggling to write his first book. This e-book is written by Steve Manning, a writing coach, who created a ‘machine’ that shall enable us to write ANYTHING in 14 days. I also have a book that just arrived from Amazon.com, written by Chris Baty, founder of National Novel Writing Month. It was a guide to writing a novel in 30 days. I read both Manning’s and Baty’s works. I also know real, live people who can actually write quite fast. 55,000 words in 30 days are plausible. 35 chapters in 14 days are plausible. I must say, with all my experience as a published writer, both methods are possible. Those methods may not help us to create the best story in history, but they help us to get something. The only remaining question is, will I dare to try? Will I dare to make it happen?
I’ve written four books now. Three novels and an anthology. I know all the aches of writing, from soul ache to back ache. I also know the bliss and ecstasy of writing, the power of creating something out of nothing, the unequivocal feeling of giving a creative birth. But 30 days, or even 60 days, or even any time limit below four months, is a whole different deal. In my heart, I refuse to do any of my work in such a short time constraint. I just don’t think it’s a ‘right’ thing to do.
So, I tell you my last and best secret weapon: a deadline. Not only I’m willing to try to finish it under 60 days, but I’m willing to make this process an open kitchen to everybody. I will not be the only one who set up and count the days to deadline, but you all may have a share in that process.
Isn’t it a perfect suicide? Nope. It is PURRRFECT. This is not just a deadline, this is a SO-DEADline. And doesn’t one need to die first to cross the deadman’s realm? For such a special tour, I cannot allow this book to travel alone. It shall be accompanied by a journal. A journal of faith and fate.
You shall see how I fumble, fail, and frustrate. You may also see how I thrive, excel, and succeed. For you gossipheads, this journal may be disappointing. It will not reveal much about my life’s drama, but it will be a close-up tour to a creative journey. You decide which one is more intimate. Heheh.
So, I’m not writing 50.000 words, I’ll be at least writing 70.000 or more.
By the time I find my novel’s headquarter, the timer starts.
One notable thing though, this WAP-book deal may happen, or may not happen. This book may be out there physically, or may not. We never know. But I will pay these eleven years debt, and I will get my story across from the fiction realm to… your realm. Our realm.
This journal, however, shall cover the pre-production period and perhaps the post-production period as well (if I don’t suddenly get lazy). Since this is a diaryish journal, and it doesn’t bend to anybody else’s rule but my own, I shall allow myself to write freely according to my mind’s nature, which is bilingual. Well, trilingual, as you shall see some of my Sundanese words pop up occasionaly.
A warning: this journal may be the most boring blog you’ll ever encounter. It may be the most nonsense, useless, and the mother of all diarrheaish blogs out there. And guess what? I DON’T CARE. Not here to entertain anybody, not here to amuse anybody. Heck, most probably we suffer together in this journey. But I welcome anybody who would like to observe, witness, either silently or not so silently. This is a true naked kitchen.
Welcome.
